    Influence of Home Background on Academic Achievement of Secondary School Students in Tambuwal Local Government, Sokoto State, Nigeria July 2015.

    Abstract
    This study was carried out to investigate the influence of home background on academic achievement of secondary school students in Tambuwal local government Sokoto state, Nigeria. The study was conducted based on three research objectives that focused on; to examine the influence of parental socio-economic status on academic achievement of students. to assess the influence of parenting style on academic achievement of students. to examine the influence of family size on academic achievement of students. The study employed a cross sectional survey design that was used to correlate quantitative data on influence of home background on academic achievement of secondary school students. A sample of 368 students was used from the total population of 9591 respondents and simple ramdom sampling was used in selecting respondents. uestionnaires ere administered to students and students records of schools’ achievement as also used. Data was analyzed using percentage (descriptive) and correlation. The findings indicated that there is a weak and positive correlation between home background and academic achievements of students. Considering the results of Pearson Product Moment Correlation of the three hypotheses viz; There is statistically significant relationship between parental socio economic status and academic achievement of students, and results indicated that, (r=.021, sig.=.006 <p= .05), which resulted to the rejection of null hypothesis.: There is statistical significant relationship between parenting style and academic achievement of students. The results of the findings revealed that (r = .071, sig. = .004 < p = .05), which also necessitated the researcher to reject the null hypothesis. In similar vein: There is statistically significant relationship between family size and academic achievement of students, the findings revealed that (r=-.059, sig. =.012 < p = .05). which made the researcher to reject the null hypothesis. Conclusively, results of the findings revealed that there is a positive and negative correlation between influence of home background on academic achievement of secondary school students in Tambuwal Local Government, Sokoto State, Nigeria. Furthermore, recommendations were made based on research objectives viz; Parents in Tambuwal local government should strive hard in sending their wards to schools regardless of their economic status, Parents in Tambuwal local government should use warmth parenting style on their children, this can be done by creating a mutual relationship with their children and also allowing their children to express their view on issues that go contrary to their view, The researcher also recommended that a family size should also be average size if the parent have to meet all the basics of their children if the children have to achieve academically.
